Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) has made it clear that she’s prepared to pursue an impeachment inquiry against former President Donald Trump—should Democrats retake the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections.
Speaking on WFAA’s Inside Texas Politics this past Sunday, Crockett didn’t hesitate when asked if she would back impeachment proceedings. “Once we get to the majority, which I’m hoping and praying we get to next cycle, that allows me to start to open up and do the things that would look like an impeachment,” she said. “Now, whether or not we would put it to a vote… he’s been impeached twice, couldn’t get convicted. There’s a lot of things to consider about whether or not to go forward.”
When pressed further, Crockett responded without hesitation: “I would absolutely at least do an inquiry. Absolutely.”
Crockett criticized Republicans for what she described as a political smear campaign targeting President Joe Biden, using his son Hunter’s legal issues as a way to discredit the president. “One of the things that we saw that they did very effectively last cycle is that they decided they were going to put Joe Biden into the trial of public opinion,” she said. “They went after his son Hunter Biden. They were saying because Hunter was having issues, Joe must have issues.”
According to Crockett, Democrats need to respond in kind—but with substance. She suggested there are serious and unresolved ethical questions surrounding Trump that warrant further investigation. “I think there is something to be said for us digging in when there’s real things to look at,” she argued, pointing specifically to a $400 million jet reportedly given by Qatar, which she suggested could violate the Constitution’s emoluments clause.
Crockett also raised concerns about Trump’s ties to cryptocurrency ventures and claims of pardons being given out in exchange for favors—although she provided no evidence to support these allegations. Still, she emphasized that these issues merit close scrutiny. “I think we need to dig into all this crypto nonsense that he’s got going on. I think we need to dig into the fact that it looks like he’s giving out pardons for play,” she said.
Republicans, meanwhile, have focused their investigative efforts on Hunter Biden, accusing him of profiting off his father’s former role as vice president. GOP-led inquiries have alleged financial ties involving Ukraine, Russia, and China, aimed at discrediting the Biden family.
With 2026 looming, Crockett’s remarks signal a potentially aggressive stance from House Democrats should they return to power.
