Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has ignited a political firestorm after fiercely criticizing former President Donald Trump’s latest tax and spending bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination” and accusing Trump of showing “ingratitude” for the support that Musk says helped him win re-election in 2024.
In a series of pointed posts on X, the platform Musk owns, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO claimed the recently passed bill would dramatically worsen the national deficit and undermine long-term economic stability. “This bill is a betrayal of fiscal responsibility,” Musk wrote. “It prioritizes short-term gains over the future of the country.”
Musk didn’t stop there. He took direct aim at Trump himself, suggesting the former president has forgotten who helped propel him back into the White House. “Without me, Trump would have lost,” Musk said. “He knows it. And yet, this is the thanks I get—public jabs and policy disaster.”
According to Musk, his support during the 2024 campaign—including substantial financial contributions to conservative digital campaigns and voter turnout initiatives—was instrumental in helping the GOP regain control of the House and win a narrow Senate majority. “If I hadn’t stepped in, Democrats would control the House, and Republicans would be looking at a 51–49 Senate,” he claimed.
This isn’t the first time Musk has clashed with prominent politicians, but his direct confrontation with Trump marks a new chapter in his political evolution. Once aligned loosely with libertarian ideals, Musk has become increasingly involved in U.S. politics, using both his money and his massive online reach to shape debate—and now, to challenge power.
Political analysts are divided over how much influence Musk actually had on the 2024 results, but few doubt that his endorsement gave Trump an edge with tech-savvy and younger voters skeptical of traditional political messaging.
The controversy comes amid growing concerns among fiscal conservatives about ballooning federal spending. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that Trump’s new tax package could add more than $2 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.
For Musk, that’s a red line. “If Republicans become the party of reckless spending,” he warned, “then they’ve lost their claim to being the party of business, innovation, and responsibility.”
The feud between Musk and Trump appears far from over, as both men dig in—and as the GOP contends with a growing rift between its traditional base and a new wave of billionaire influencers.
