Republican Tells Omar To Leave United States After She Defends Iran

Ilhan Omar Defends Iran, Slams Trump in Explosive Remarks After U.S. Strike

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is once again at the center of political controversy after making statements this week that appeared to defend Iran while sharply criticizing former President Donald Trump. Her comments came just before the United States military dropped bunker-buster bombs on Iran’s nuclear facilities, escalating tensions in an already volatile region.

The backlash from conservatives was swift and fierce, with Texas Republican Rep. Randy Weber responding bluntly: “If it’s so bad here and you don’t like it, go to some other country. It’s just that simple.”

Omar’s Controversial Statement

On X (formerly Twitter), Omar declared:

“No one is attacking or has attacked Americans. It’s time to stop dragging Americans into war and letting Israel once again get America involved in their chosen war. Stand up for the Americans who believed you wanted peace and don’t commit another generation of Americans into a costly war.”

The statement stunned critics, who pointed to decades of evidence linking Iran to violent actions against Americans.

Iran’s History of Attacks on Americans

Omar’s assertion that “no one is attacking Americans” runs directly counter to the historical record.

  • In 2019, a U.S. military report estimated that Iran was responsible for the deaths of at least 603 American service members in Iraq between 2003 and 2011.

  • After President Trump ordered the killing of Qassem Soleimani, commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iranian-backed militias launched rocket attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq.

  • In 2024, Iran was accused of plotting an assassination attempt against Trump himself through a murder-for-hire scheme.

Despite this, Omar framed her remarks as an attempt to keep America out of what she described as “Israel’s chosen war.”

Omar’s Broader Criticism of America

Beyond foreign policy, Omar has frequently criticized the U.S. as a nation drifting toward authoritarianism. In a recent interview with Democracy Now, she compared Trump’s America to the dictatorship she fled in Somalia.

She cited U.S. troops being deployed during protests in Los Angeles and contrasted it with the military parade Trump held in Washington, D.C.

“Can you imagine that image that is going to be coming out of our country?” Omar asked. “I grew up in a dictatorship, and I don’t even remember ever witnessing anything like that.”

She went on to accuse Trump of acting like a “failed dictator,” using the military as a political prop instead of respecting constitutional rights.

Call for Protest

Omar urged Americans to take to the streets, warning that the U.S. is “not the country we were born in” and that its founding ideals are under threat.

“It should be a wake-up call for all Americans,” she said. “This is not the country our Founding Fathers imagined, and this is not the country that is supported by our Constitution, our ideals, our values.”

The congresswoman went further, explicitly accusing Trump of destroying the country:

“I think the person who is in the process of destroying our country should look in the mirror and that’s Trump.”

Immediate Backlash

Critics wasted no time firing back. Fox News contributor Guy Benson blasted Omar’s comments as “hyperbole” made worse by “astounding ingratitude.”

David Hookstead of OutKick mocked Omar’s outrage over a military parade:

“If people are seriously offended by a parade for the first time in decades, then go outside and touch some grass,” he said. “We have the greatest military on the planet, and we shouldn’t ever apologize for it.”

Republican lawmakers echoed these sentiments, accusing Omar of undermining American credibility while defending a hostile foreign adversary.

A Familiar Pattern of Controversy

Omar’s remarks are far from the first time she has drawn fire for her comments on foreign policy and U.S. values. Since joining Congress in 2019, she has frequently clashed with Republicans — and sometimes even Democrats — over her criticisms of Israel, U.S. military actions, and American exceptionalism.

Supporters argue that Omar is speaking truth to power and advocating for peace in the face of endless wars. Critics contend that her statements embolden America’s enemies and diminish her credibility as a lawmaker sworn to protect the Constitution.

Political Stakes Rising

The timing of Omar’s remarks — just as the U.S. launched strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities — adds fuel to the fire. The Biden administration has sought to project strength while avoiding a full-scale conflict with Iran, but Omar’s comments risk widening the divide within the Democratic Party itself.

Republicans, meanwhile, see her statements as a political gift. With the 2026 midterms approaching, GOP strategists are already using Omar’s words as part of a broader narrative portraying Democrats as weak on national security.

The Bigger Picture

The controversy raises larger questions about how America should respond to Iran’s aggression and whether the U.S. is headed for another long, costly military engagement in the Middle East.

For Omar, the incident reinforces her reputation as one of the most outspoken and polarizing members of Congress. Whether her approach will energize progressives or alienate mainstream voters remains to be seen.

As for Trump, he remains a central figure in the debate. Even out of office, his policies toward Iran — from the Soleimani strike to the “maximum pressure” sanctions campaign — continue to shape the battlefield and the political conversation at home.
