Vice President J.D. Vance lit up the stage at the Claremont Institute’s Statesmanship Award dinner this week, taking sharp aim at New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. The controversy erupted after Mamdani posted a message on July 4th describing America as “beautiful, contradictory, and unfinished.”
While some praised Mamdani’s post as “thoughtful,” others — including Vance — saw it as an example of entitled rhetoric from someone whose family had directly benefited from the freedoms and safety America offers.
“There is no gratitude in those words,” Vance said. “No sense of owing something to this land… Who the hell does he think he is?”
Vance Challenges Mamdani’s “Contradictory America” Message
Vance began by pointing out that Mamdani’s Independence Day remarks failed to acknowledge the profound sacrifices made by Americans throughout history. He noted the contrast between Mamdani’s words and the lives lost fighting to build the very freedoms his family enjoys.
“Has he ever read letters from boy soldiers in the Union Army who died for the freedom he takes for granted?” Vance asked. “Has he ever looked in the mirror and recognized that he might not be alive if not for this country?”
A Family History Tied to American Refuge
Mamdani is the son of Ugandan-born scholar Mahmood Mamdani and Indian-born filmmaker Mira Nair. His father fled Uganda during the 1972 ethnic expulsion of Asians by dictator Idi Amin. Vance noted that America welcomed the Mamdani family when they needed a safe haven — something that should be met with appreciation, not critique.
“His family fled violent racial hatred,” Vance said. “Only to come to a country overflowing with generosity — and now he dares to reduce it to contradictions?”
Tensions Rise Ahead of NYC Mayoral Race
Mamdani, a progressive Democrat and current state assemblyman, announced his candidacy for NYC mayor earlier this year. His platform includes housing reform, police restructuring, and radical immigration shifts. But his July 4 comments have already created a firestorm that his campaign may struggle to contain.
Some Democrats are reportedly uneasy about Mamdani’s tone, especially after Vance’s remarks went viral across conservative media platforms. Several GOP-aligned commentators have labeled Mamdani “ungrateful,” while others claim he is “alienating patriotic voters.”
The Bigger Debate: Patriotism vs. Progressivism
Vance’s speech reflects a growing national divide over how elected officials should talk about America — especially on symbolic days like Independence Day. For conservatives, Mamdani’s statement was a red flag. For progressives, it was honest criticism.
But Vance’s core argument? That Mamdani, of all people, should understand the exceptionalism of the country that gave his family freedom and opportunity.
“This country isn’t perfect,” Vance concluded. “But if you can’t show gratitude for it — especially on its birthday — maybe you’re not the one to lead its greatest city.”
