Trump Celebrates ‘Great Victory’ After ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ Advances in Senate
President Donald Trump celebrated a major political win after the Senate passed a key vote to advance his signature “Big, Beautiful Bill.” The measure now moves to a lengthy debate, setting the stage for the next phase of the legislative process.
The Senate voted 51-49 along party lines to begin debate on the bill, with Republicans holding a slim majority of 53 seats. Notably, Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) switched his vote from ‘no’ to ‘yes,’ calling the bill a “necessary first step” toward fiscal responsibility. Johnson emphasized the need to address the “enormous messes” left behind by the Biden administration, including open borders, ongoing wars, and rising deficits.
“This bill is vital to put America on a sustainable economic path,” Johnson said after weeks of collaboration with Trump’s economic team.
Despite the Republican support, two GOP senators, Thom Tillis (N.C.) and Rand Paul (Ky.), voted against moving forward with the bill. Trump did not hold back in criticizing these dissenters on his Truth Social platform, calling Tillis a “talker and complainer” and likening Rand Paul to Dr. Fauci in a disparaging manner.
Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, condemned the bill as “radical” and opposed its secretive release. Schumer vowed to delay the debate by forcing senators to read the entire 940-page document aloud, a tactic expected to stretch the discussion for up to 15 hours. Senator Elizabeth Warren echoed the resistance, posting on X that Democrats were fighting “all night” to oppose Trump’s legislation.
Meanwhile, Republicans like Senator Rick Scott (Fla.) hailed the bill as a proud effort to “balance the budget after years of reckless Democratic spending.” Scott reaffirmed commitment to Trump’s agenda to “Make America Great Again.”
Trump praised key Republican supporters of the bill, including Sens. Johnson, Scott, Mike Lee (Utah), and Cynthia Lummis (Wyoming), calling them “true patriots.” In a Truth Social post, he outlined his vision for the bill: growing the economy, cutting wasteful spending, securing borders, supporting military and veterans, reforming Medicaid, and protecting the Second Amendment.
Senator John Cornyn (Texas) described the legislation as “significant,” noting it would prevent tax hikes on families, reinforce border security, and reduce burdensome taxes, steering the country toward fiscal sanity after years of Democratic overspending.
The “Big, Beautiful Bill” now awaits a vote in the House of Representatives before it can reach Trump’s desk. The President aims to sign it by July 4, marking a symbolic victory for his administration’s legislative priorities.
