Karoline Leavitt Shuts Down False Claims Linking Trump to Texas Flood Tragedy

Karoline Leavitt Slams False Claims Linking Trump to Deadly Texas Floods: “A Depraved Lie”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt delivered a fiery rebuttal on Monday, forcefully rejecting claims that the Trump administration’s budget decisions played a role in the tragic flash floods that devastated Kerr County, Texas, earlier this month.

The flooding event — which claimed the lives of over 90 people — has sparked intense political debate, with several Democratic lawmakers and left-leaning media outlets alleging that staffing cuts at the National Weather Service (NWS) under former President Trump led to slower warnings and increased casualties.

Leavitt, speaking from the White House press podium, made clear that such accusations were not only false, but “disgusting political theater.”

“These offices were fully staffed,” Leavitt said. “The San Angelo office had 12 forecast meteorologists. There were no vacancies. The San Antonio office had 11 forecasters. In fact, one office was overstaffed. Any claim to the contrary is completely false.”

The claims surfaced after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and others implied that staffing shortages contributed to delayed flood warnings, causing more deaths. Leavitt called that narrative not only incorrect, but harmful in a time of national mourning.

“Blaming President Trump for these floods is a depraved lie,” she said. “It serves no purpose during this time of grief for the families who lost everything.”

According to Leavitt and reports from federal agencies, including NOAA and DHS, the NWS issued accurate and timely warnings:

  • A flood watch was issued on July 3 for the affected region.

  • On July 4, flash flood warnings were issued with approximately four hours of lead time.

  • Extra staff were assigned during the storm response.

Despite those facts, social media posts from figures like MeidasTouch editor Ron Filipkowski spread the theory that GOP leadership was at fault. His post — blaming Trump and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott — was later deleted but had already ignited online backlash.

In response, Leavitt said: “To any person who has deliberately lied about the facts surrounding this catastrophic event — you should be deeply ashamed.”

She confirmed that President Trump will travel to Texas later this week to meet with affected families, emergency responders, and local officials. Recovery operations in Kerr County remain active, and the administration has pledged continued federal support.

The Department of Homeland Security also weighed in, noting that recent budget adjustments cited by critics had not yet been implemented and therefore played no role in the flood forecasting or emergency response.

“The administration is doing all that we can on the ground to help these families,” Leavitt said.

As the political fallout continues, Leavitt’s defense of the Trump administration stands as one of the most assertive moments of her tenure so far — pushing back against what she called “false, baseless narratives that exploit a tragedy for political gain.”
