A growing political firestorm is brewing in Washington as the House Oversight Committee intensifies its investigation into President Joe Biden’s mental fitness during his time in office. Spearheaded by Chairman James Comer (R-KY), the probe has zeroed in on whether top White House aides, including First Lady Jill Biden and senior advisor Anthony Bernal, orchestrated a coordinated effort to conceal the extent of the President’s alleged cognitive decline.
The investigation gained renewed attention following explosive claims by Lindy Li, a former Democratic National Committee fundraiser who recently defected from the party. In a high-profile interview, Li alleged that President Biden was not fully in control during his administration and that Jill Biden acted as a “ringmaster,” overseeing decisions alongside a close inner circle of aides. According to Li, this amounted to nothing short of a “coordinated cover-up.”
“Joe Biden was complicit, but he wasn’t in control,” Li said. “There were puppet masters — and Jill Biden was the ringmaster.”
Central to the investigation is Anthony Bernal, a longtime confidant of Jill Biden who served as her senior aide and was often seen at her side during key moments of the administration. The committee has issued a subpoena demanding Bernal testify under oath after he initially agreed to appear voluntarily but later backed out. The Oversight Committee accuses Bernal of helping to shield the public from the true state of the President’s health.
According to Comer, the committee has reason to believe that Bernal was instrumental in controlling access to the President and may have played a role in decisions made on Biden’s behalf. The subpoena demands Bernal appear for a transcribed interview on July 16.
“This investigation is not about politics,” Comer stated. “It’s about transparency. The American people have a right to know who was really making decisions in the White House.”
Li’s claims have only added fuel to the fire, as she pointed to other figures in the administration — including Neera Tanden, Steve Ricchetti, and Mike Donilon — as the true decision-makers behind the scenes. She even accused Tanden of approving the use of an autopen to sign documents in Biden’s name, further questioning the President’s ability to carry out basic duties.
While the White House has yet to issue a formal response, one former official dismissed Li’s allegations, reportedly saying, “Who is Lindy Li?”
As the investigation unfolds, the political implications could be significant. Whether the committee uncovers solid evidence or not, the inquiry is already reshaping public perception — and raising new questions about who truly held power during Joe Biden’s presidency.
