Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is under fire after making sharp personal comments about First Lady Melania Trump during a contentious House Judiciary Committee hearing this week. Her remarks, targeting Melania’s modeling background and U.S. visa status, have sparked outrage across social media and reignited the feud between progressive Democrats and the Trump administration.
While attacking former President Trump’s immigration policies during Wednesday’s hearing, Crockett abruptly turned her attention to Melania Trump, questioning how she was granted the prestigious EB-1 “Einstein visa,” a classification typically reserved for individuals with extraordinary abilities in fields such as science, the arts, or athletics.
“Melania, the first lady—a model, and when I say model, I’m not talking Tyra Banks or Naomi Campbell level—was given an EB-1 visa,” Crockett said mockingly. “You’re supposed to have some sort of significant achievement like a Nobel Prize or a Pulitzer.” She went on to question Melania’s qualifications, quipping, “Last time I checked, the math ain’t mathin’ here.”
The EB-1 visa program is known for its stringent requirements, designed for individuals with internationally recognized achievements. Melania Trump, who immigrated from Slovenia in the 1990s to pursue a modeling career, became a U.S. citizen in 2006, the year she married Donald Trump.
Crockett’s remarks quickly went viral, with critics accusing her of unnecessary cruelty and elitism. Many took to social media to defend the former First Lady and accuse Crockett of jealousy.
“Can Jasmine Crockett speak five languages like Melania? No. So she can just close her mouth,” one user wrote on X. Another added, “Melania has more class in her little finger than Crockett has in her whole body.”
Others pointed out that Melania’s achievements in the modeling industry met the standard for the EB-1 visa under U.S. immigration law at the time and accused Crockett of hypocrisy for personal attacks while decrying attacks against her own party.
The heated exchange comes amid broader political tension, as President Trump recently blasted Crockett and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) over efforts to push Congress toward another impeachment vote.
With emotions running high and the 2024 election still fresh, Crockett’s comments have drawn a sharp rebuke—and sparked yet another round of partisan conflict.
