In a fiery and profanity-laced appearance on political analyst Malcolm Nance’s YouTube show, former MSNBC host Joy Reid unleashed a scathing critique of President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Reid accused both men of being devoid of principles and likened Trump’s base of supporters to a “monotheistic cult,” raising eyebrows across the political spectrum.
Reid’s comments came during a nearly two-minute uninterrupted monologue in which she launched a personal and political attack on Secretary Rubio, criticizing his religious background, political flexibility, and motivations for aligning with Trump.
“Marco Rubio believes in nothing,” Reid said bluntly. “He’s been a Catholic, a Mormon, an Evangelical — whatever works in the moment. And he’s also whatever ideology fits at the time.”
She accused Rubio of shifting his stance on key issues, including foreign policy, particularly concerning Ukraine and Russia, depending on what was politically expedient.
Reid then referenced Rubio’s complicated history with Trump, noting that despite once harshly criticizing the former president, Rubio now embraces him. “He thought Donald Trump was a small-penis weakling, and now he thinks Donald Trump is God,” she remarked. “Marco Rubio believes in nothing.”
Although Rubio was one of Trump’s most vocal critics during the 2016 Republican primary, he later aligned himself with the Trump administration and was confirmed as Secretary of State in Trump’s second term by a unanimous 99-0 Senate vote on January 20. Once a senator from Florida, Rubio has since become a key figure in shaping Trump’s foreign policy agenda.
But Reid insists Rubio’s motives are far from principled. “Marco Rubio is doing what he’s doing now because he thinks he can inherit the cult of Donald Trump,” she said. “When Trump is aged out … he thinks he’ll inherit that cult — they all think that.”
Drawing a parallel between Trump and infamous cult leader Jim Jones, Reid argued that Trump’s supporters cannot be simply transferred to another figure. “What they don’t understand is that when Jim Jones was gone, there was no other Jim Jones,” she said.
According to Reid, the devotion of Trump’s base goes beyond politics. “These people are a monotheistic cult. And the god they worship isn’t even God — it’s Donald Trump.”
The tirade underscores the continued polarization surrounding Trump and his allies, as well as the growing tensions between progressive commentators and the administration’s leadership. Whether Rubio’s rise within Trump’s orbit leads to greater political power or further criticism remains to be seen.
