The House Oversight Committee is ramping up its investigation into allegations that President Joe Biden’s senior staff may have concealed details about his cognitive health during the final stretch of his presidency.
Led by Chairman James Comer (R-KY), the committee has officially requested testimony from four key figures within the former administration: former Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates, and former White House Counsel’s Office spokesperson Ian Sams.
According to Comer, the panel is probing whether top White House aides misled the American public about the president’s mental acuity, despite growing signs of cognitive decline. Comer claims Biden’s inner circle insisted he was “sharp as ever” while suppressing concerns and pushing back against media scrutiny.
“These officials repeatedly reassured the public that the president was mentally fit,” Comer stated. “Behind closed doors, the reality may have been very different.”
Karine Jean-Pierre, now promoting a book rumored to expose behind-the-scenes dysfunction in the Biden administration, has emerged as a central figure in the investigation. Meanwhile, Jeff Zients, known for his proximity to Biden as his final chief of staff, is also under scrutiny.
Earlier this week, the committee interviewed former domestic policy advisor Neera Tanden. Her testimony revealed she had limited direct interaction with Biden, relying instead on filtered memos passed through senior staff. This has raised questions about who was actually making high-level decisions — and whether Biden was even aware of them.
One of the more striking revelations involved the use of an autopen to sign official documents, suggesting that decisions may have been made without the president’s full understanding or approval.
In a new twist, the committee also issued a subpoena to Anthony Bernal, a longtime Biden aide and close confidant of First Lady Jill Biden. Bernal, who initially agreed to testify voluntarily, later backed out.
The investigation centers on whether Biden’s top aides acted independently of his directives, possibly shielding the public from the extent of his condition. While no hearing dates have been confirmed, the committee has signaled its intent to bring the matter to light.
The inquiry adds to growing political pressure as questions mount over the transparency and decision-making within the Biden White House during his final year in office.
