Trump Accuses Democrats of Iran Strike Leak as FBI Opens National Security Investigation
President Donald Trump is pointing the finger at congressional Democrats over a major leak of classified intelligence related to recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The allegation has triggered an FBI investigation into the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive national security information.
In a statement posted to Truth Social on Thursday, Trump wrote, “The Democrats are the ones who leaked the information on the PERFECT FLIGHT to the Nuclear Sites in Iran. They should be prosecuted!” His comments follow widespread media coverage of a leaked Pentagon intelligence report suggesting the strikes caused only limited damage to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
CNN was first to report on the leak earlier this week, citing anonymous sources who had access to a top-secret assessment. The report allegedly stated that Iran’s nuclear sites remained “largely intact” and that the strikes only delayed Tehran’s program by a few months. CNN read segments of the report live on air, while the Associated Press later echoed the findings.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has refuted those claims, saying publicly that the leaked document was a “preliminary” and unverified analysis. Hegseth emphasized that it had not been coordinated with the broader intelligence community and warned the public not to accept the report at face value.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the issue at a Wednesday briefing, confirming that the FBI is now conducting a formal investigation. “This is a matter of national security, and we are taking it very seriously,” she said. Leavitt also noted that the breach may have originated from within Congress.
“It is possible this information came from Capitol Hill,” Leavitt told reporters. She said the administration is working closely with congressional leadership and law enforcement agencies to identify the leaker.
The leak has reignited debate over whether lawmakers should retain access to highly classified operational intelligence. President Trump has since ordered a review of briefing procedures, with plans to limit the distribution of top-secret information to a smaller, more controlled group of officials.
As the FBI investigation unfolds, those found responsible may face criminal charges. The White House has not released a timeline for the investigation or announced what new safeguards will be implemented, but pressure is mounting to tighten control over sensitive military intelligence.
