Fetterman Torpedoes Latest Anti-Trump Push in Congress

Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) poured cold water on calls from within his party to impeach President Trump following the U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend.

Progressive lawmakers, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), ramped up impeachment talk after Trump authorized a surprise military strike targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure early Sunday morning. But Fetterman, a swing-state Democrat with growing national influence, said the proposal was going nowhere fast.

“Of course, no,” Fetterman told Fox News when asked if impeachment was a viable path forward. “She knows it. I know it. We all know it… that’s not going anywhere.” He went on to caution his party against casually invoking impeachment, warning that doing so dilutes its seriousness.

The strikes—14 precision “bunker buster” bombs dropped on Iranian nuclear sites—sparked swift backlash from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, with Ocasio-Cortez calling Trump’s decision a “grave violation of the Constitution.” She accused the president of circumventing Congress and risking full-scale war without proper authorization.

But Fetterman, who has publicly backed the airstrikes, pushed back. He emphasized the need for realism and focus. “Impeachment is not a magic wand,” he said, adding that repeating past efforts with no chance of success only weakens Democrats politically.

Other Democratic leaders were more measured. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned Trump’s unilateral action but stopped short of calling for impeachment. Jeffries claimed the administration “failed to seek congressional authorization” and warned that Trump “bears full responsibility for any fallout.”

Sources later confirmed that the White House attempted to contact congressional leadership before the strikes, but several key Democrats, including Jeffries, reportedly did not respond in time.

Fetterman’s comments reveal a deepening divide within the Democratic Party over how to handle Trump’s foreign policy decisions—particularly as tensions in the Middle East rise. While some Democrats demand aggressive responses, others, like Fetterman, are urging restraint and political focus.

“Throwing the term impeachment around every time you disagree with someone doesn’t help anyone,” he said. “We need to stop treating it like a campaign slogan.”

For now, Fetterman’s rejection appears to have stalled AOC’s momentum—and may have saved Trump from a third round of impeachment theatrics.
