U.S. President Donald Trump announced this week that Dan Bongino, the former Secret Service agent and conservative media personality, has been appointed Deputy Director of the FBI by new Director Kash Patel. Bongino assumed the role on March 17, 2025, marking a rapid ascent within the agency.
Within hours of his swearing-in, Bongino delivered a stark warning aimed at Senator Adam Schiff (D‑CA), one of the key figures behind the Trump–Russia collusion narrative. On his long-running podcast, Bongino said he refuses to “move on” from the false allegations perpetuated by Schiff and others during Trump’s first term. He suggested the narrative was “fabricated” to sway public opinion and damage U.S. relations with a nuclear power .
“I refuse to let this matter rest,” Bongino declared. “We had the FBI, DOJ, congressional officials, foreign governments, and intelligence personnel concoct a narrative that could have inflicted significant and lasting damage.” He emphasized that those responsible “manipulated the justice system to lend legitimacy to a false story” and vowed to continue exposing the individuals behind it.
Trump himself confirmed Bongino’s appointment via Truth Social, stating that Bongino’s “love and passion for our Country” make him the right choice for the position. Trump praised Bongino’s decision to step away from his podcast — cited as one of the nation’s most popular conservative shows — in order to serve. He expressed confidence that, alongside Bongino, Attorney General Pam Bondi and Director Patel would swiftly restore “Fairness, Justice, Law and Order” within the FBI.
Bongino’s law enforcement career includes service with the NYPD (1995–1999) and the Secret Service (1999–2011), where he protected presidents and later criticized the agency for lapses that included the attempted assassination of Trump. These criticisms ultimately led to high-level resignations within the Secret Service.
Political observers note the significance of appointing a former Fox News and podcast figure directly into a top FBI role. Trump allies view the shift as a move toward reclaiming an agency they believe became politicized under prior administrations .
The unfolding dynamic positions Bongino in direct conflict with Schiff, his aggressive stance serving as an early indicator of just how forcefully this Trump-led direction will confront past political and intelligence controversies. As Bongino settles into his new post, all eyes will be on how he uses his authority—and whether he pursues investigations targeting figures like Schiff who were vocal proponents of the collusion narrative.
