Authorities in Minnesota are searching for a suspect believed to be responsible for a deadly series of shootings that left one state lawmaker dead and another seriously injured. Law enforcement officials have identified the suspect as Vance Luther Boelter, a former appointee in the administration of Governor Tim Walz.
According to police, Boelter allegedly posed as a police officer when he entered the Champlin residence of State Senator John Hoffman early Saturday morning. Both Hoffman and his wife sustained serious injuries in the attack.
Shortly afterward, the suspect reportedly traveled to Brooklyn Park, where he is accused of fatally shooting former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman. The suspect exchanged gunfire with officers who arrived on the scene but managed to flee on foot, according to a statement from the Brooklyn Park Police Department.
Authorities say the suspect was wearing a vest, a badge, and equipment that resembled standard police gear, including what appeared to be a Taser. Police emphasized that the uniform was not authentic and believe Boelter used the disguise to gain access to the homes undetected.
Investigators say documents recovered from the suspect’s abandoned vehicle included a written manifesto and lists of individuals identified as potential future targets. Some of the materials contained political references, though officials have not yet confirmed a specific motive.
Governor Walz condemned the incident as a “politically motivated act of violence” but stated that the investigation is ongoing and further details will be released as they are confirmed.
President Donald Trump also addressed the situation, calling it “a targeted attack against state lawmakers” and offering federal resources to assist with the investigation. The FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are currently working with local agencies to locate the suspect and assess any broader threats.
Melissa Hortman, 55, served in the Minnesota House of Representatives for nearly two decades and was known for her work on infrastructure and education. Senator Hoffman, who remains hospitalized, has served since 2013.
