White tent set up outside Nancy Guthrie’s home

A white forensic tent has been erected outside the Arizona home of Nancy Guthrie as authorities intensify their investigation into the mysterious disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie.

The development marks one of the most significant visible steps in the case since Guthrie was reported missing on February 1, and signals that investigators continue to treat the property as an active and potentially critical crime scene.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the evening of January 31, when she took an Uber to visit relatives for what family members described as a routine gathering that included dinner and games. According to investigators, she left the family home without any signs of distress and returned to her residence in Pima County, Arizona, later that night.

Ride-share records show Guthrie was dropped off at approximately 9:48 p.m. Surveillance footage from her property captured her garage door opening shortly after she arrived and closing again within minutes, suggesting she entered the home as usual. Authorities say there were no immediate indications of anything unusual during that timeframe.

However, events in the early morning hours of February 1 have since become the central focus of the investigation.

According to information released by law enforcement and reporting from NBC News, Guthrie’s doorbell camera system was disconnected at 1:47 a.m. Investigators believe the disconnection may have been deliberate, though officials have not publicly confirmed whether it was caused by an intruder or a technical malfunction.

Roughly 25 minutes later, at 2:12 a.m., motion-detection software associated with the same system registered the presence of a person near the front door. Critically, no corresponding video footage was recorded or recovered from that moment, leaving a gap in the visual timeline that investigators are now working to explain.

It was not until late the following morning that Guthrie’s family realized something was wrong. Concerned after being unable to reach her, relatives went to her home at approximately 11:56 a.m. on February 1. Upon arrival, they discovered she was not inside and contacted authorities.

A 911 call was placed at 12:03 p.m., and deputies from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the scene about 10 minutes later. The case quickly escalated into a large-scale missing-person investigation involving multiple law enforcement units, search teams, and forensic specialists.

In the latest development, local outlet 13 News reported that investigators erected a white forensic tent outside Guthrie’s home at around 8:00 a.m. The tent has been positioned near the same entrance where surveillance images previously captured a masked individual earlier in the investigation.

While authorities have not publicly detailed what evidence is being processed beneath the tent, such structures are commonly used by forensic teams to shield sensitive evidence collection from public view and environmental contamination. Their presence typically indicates that investigators are conducting detailed examinations of physical evidence at the scene.

Law enforcement officials have remained tight-lipped about the direction of the case, declining to comment on whether they believe Guthrie was abducted or whether foul play is definitively involved. However, the sequence of events — including the camera disconnection and unexplained motion detection — has raised significant concern among both investigators and the public.

The case has drawn national attention not only because of the unusual circumstances, but also due to Guthrie’s connection to a high-profile media figure. Savannah Guthrie has not spoken extensively about the investigation publicly, but family members have indicated they are cooperating fully with authorities and are desperate for answers.

Investigators have previously released images of a masked individual seen on the property’s surveillance system around the time of Guthrie’s disappearance. The individual was wearing gloves and carrying a backpack, and appeared to be tampering with the doorbell camera, which has become a central piece of the investigation.

Authorities continue to ask anyone with information, surveillance footage, or relevant tips from the surrounding area in Pima County to come forward.

As the forensic work continues under the newly erected tent, investigators are hoping that physical evidence recovered at the scene will help fill in the missing hours of the timeline — and ultimately reveal what happened to Nancy Guthrie.
