Three Children Rescued After Being Locked Inside Home for Four Years by COVID-Fearing Parents

Authorities labeled the residence a ‘nightmare home’ after what they uncovered

Three young siblings reportedly confined indoors by their parents for four years have now been freed.

On Monday (April 28), Spanish authorities rescued eight-year-old twins and their 10-year-old brother.

The children are believed to have been kept inside since 2021, with no access to school during that time.

Reports say the kids were still following outdated COVID measures, including constantly wearing face coverings.

Following their rescue, they were taken for a full health check and are now under protective care in a juvenile facility, according to Sky News.

Their parents are now in custody. Authorities say the pair may be suffering from ‘COVID syndrome’ and are facing charges of sustained psychological abuse and abandonment, per Oviedo Police Department.

The 53- and 48-year-old suspects are being detained without bond.

What is COVID syndrome?

Sometimes referred to as COVID anxiety syndrome (CAS), this mental condition causes extreme fear surrounding infection.

VeryWellMind explains symptoms include repeated symptom-checking, avoiding social settings, compulsive cleaning, and controlling actions.

What have investigators revealed?

Oviedo’s Police Chief Javier Lozano described the home as a ‘nightmare house’ at a press event. One officer told El Mundo: “Their condition was shocking. Not starved, but filthy… totally disconnected from the world, especially because they weren’t in school.”

He continued: “When we brought them outside to the garden — which they had never stepped into — they spotted a snail and panicked in amazement.”

What did officers uncover inside?

Inside the home, investigators found the children’s beds were cots marked with disturbing monster drawings.

The residence was cluttered with trash, numerous pills, and discarded face masks, creating a visibly hazardous environment.

As the children, born to German parents, didn’t speak Spanish, police had to communicate with them in English due to their isolation from education.
