Explosion tears through nursing home

A mass casualty incident has been declared after a powerful explosion tore through a nursing home in Pennsylvania, triggering a major emergency response and leaving multiple people trapped inside the burning building.

The blast struck Silver Lake Healthcare Center in Bristol Township at approximately 2.15pm on Tuesday, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air and sparking a large fire that quickly engulfed parts of the facility.

Emergency crews from across the region rushed to the scene as reports emerged that residents and staff were trapped inside the building. Authorities have not yet confirmed how many people were injured, but officials described the situation as rapidly evolving and extremely serious.

Upper Makefield Township labeled the explosion a mass casualty incident, according to local outlet WPVI, indicating that the scale of the emergency required a coordinated response involving multiple agencies.

Chaos and Flames at the Scene

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as fire engines, ambulances, and police vehicles converged on the nursing home, which houses some of the area’s most vulnerable residents.

Large flames were visible in the aftermath of the explosion, while firefighters worked to contain the blaze and clear debris in an effort to reach those still inside.

Law enforcement officials urged members of the public to stay away from the area as first responders battled the fire and conducted rescue operations.

“We understand that there are people trapped inside,” Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Ruth Miller told CBS Philadelphia, underscoring the urgency of the response.

Firefighters were seen entering and exiting the damaged structure amid thick smoke as crews searched room by room, attempting to evacuate residents and ensure no one was left behind.

Facility Houses Dozens of Residents

Silver Lake Healthcare Center is a sizable facility, with 174 beds listed on its website. The nursing home is located about 25 miles northwest of Philadelphia and serves elderly and medically vulnerable residents from across the region.

The presence of so many residents raised immediate concerns about the potential scale of injuries, especially given the speed at which the fire spread after the explosion.

Officials have not yet released details about the cause of the blast, and investigators are expected to begin examining the site once the scene is fully secured.

Governor Briefed as State Resources Mobilized

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed that he had been briefed on the incident and said state agencies were offering full support.

“My Administration is in contact with local officials and first responders on the ground,” Shapiro wrote in a post on X.

He added that Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency had offered “their full support and any resources needed” as the response continues.

“The scene is still active, and folks nearby should follow the direction of local authorities,” the governor said. “Please join Lori and me in praying for the Bristol community.”

State officials emphasized that additional resources could be deployed if needed, depending on how the situation develops.

Eyewitness Accounts Describe Overwhelming Response

State Rep. Tina Davis, who was nearby when the explosion occurred, described an overwhelming emergency response as crews flooded into the area.

“I saw smoke and I saw car after car after car — fire trucks and ambulances from all over the city, from all over,” Davis told the Associated Press.

She described the moment as heartbreaking, particularly given the time of year.

“It’s just so sad — it’s that hopeful time of year,” Davis said. “This is just something that is sad for everybody and the families and the workers that are there.”

Davis added that officials were still waiting for clarity on injuries and outcomes as rescue efforts continued.

“I hope there’s positive results from this. We don’t know at this point,” she said.

Reunification Center Established

As the emergency unfolded, district buses were dispatched to help transport displaced residents from the scene to a reunification center set up at nearby Truman High School.

Officials said the center would serve as a temporary safe location for residents, families, and staff as emergency operations continue.

Authorities were working to set up beds, distribute water, and provide other essential supplies to those affected by the explosion.

Family members were urged to remain calm and await official instructions regarding reunification and updates on their loved ones.

Cause of Explosion Unknown

At this stage, the cause of the explosion remains unclear. Officials have not said whether the blast may have been related to gas, electrical systems, or other infrastructure within the facility.

Investigators are expected to conduct a thorough examination once firefighters extinguish the blaze and confirm the building is structurally safe.

Law enforcement officials emphasized that speculation should be avoided until more information becomes available.

Ongoing Emergency Operations

Photos from the scene showed fire engines and emergency vehicles lining nearby roads as responders worked amid scattered debris.

Firefighters were seen using hoses to douse remaining flames while search-and-rescue teams continued to assess the building.

Authorities warned that road closures and traffic disruptions could remain in place for several hours as the response continues.

Residents in nearby neighborhoods were advised to follow official guidance and avoid the area until further notice.

Community on Edge

The explosion has sent shockwaves through the Bristol Township community, with many expressing concern for the elderly residents and staff members who were inside the facility at the time of the blast.

Local officials said counseling and support services would likely be made available to families and first responders once the immediate crisis has passed.

As night fell, emergency lights continued to flash around the damaged nursing home, underscoring the scale of the response and the uncertainty surrounding the outcome.

Officials said updates would be provided as more information becomes available and rescue efforts progress.
