Elon Musk blasted for ‘painfully awkward’ joke during cabinet meeting with President
Billionaire branded ‘cringe-worthy and try-hard’
Elon Musk is catching heat for a ‘painfully awkward’ joke made to President Donald Trump during a recent high-level cabinet discussion.
The tech mogul has been closely tied to government affairs since being named head of the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Although DOGE isn’t an official agency, it serves as an external consultant to Trump on reducing federal costs.
Still, Musk’s influence within the White House as an unelected figure since January’s inauguration has drawn sharp criticism.
This has sparked anger from critics, with Tesla boycotts taking place nationwide and several stores vandalized in protest.
Now, a viral video has surfaced from a meeting discussing Trump’s first 100 days in office with senior officials.
But what truly drew attention online wasn’t policy—it was Musk’s strange wardrobe choice at the White House.
In the video, Musk is seen wearing one red cap stacked on top of a black one.
The top cap bore the phrase “the Gulf of America,” referencing Trump’s controversial bid to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
The footage shows Trump noticing the fashion choice, saying: “Elon, I love the double hat, buddy. He’s the only one that can do that.”
And it’s Musk’s comeback that made many on social media cringe hard.
He responded: “Well, Mr President, they say I wear a lot of hats and it’s true, even my hat has a hat.”
Thousands quickly commented on X (formerly Twitter), mocking the awkward moment.

One user posted: “Painfully awkward and trying so hard to be funny.”
Another added: “Never seen anyone look more out of place in a hat. Take it off, don’t layer them.”
A third asked: “Why is he always trying to be quirky? It’s unbearable.”
A fourth wrote: “Elmo’s trying way too hard to crack jokes. It’s tough to sit through.”
A fifth posted: “All that cash and not a single trace of charisma. Incredible.”
A sixth said: “Absolute circus behavior while the country falls apart.”
This isn’t Musk’s first fashion faux pas at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue—he’s often been spotted wearing pro-Trump caps and cheeky slogan tees.
