A top Democrat senator appeared visibly frustrated during a Sunday interview after being pressed about President Donald Trump’s historic success in reducing illegal border crossings.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) joined NBC’s Meet the Press to discuss immigration policy, where he openly refused to credit Trump’s administration for the stunning 93% drop in illegal entries over the past year.
In May 2025, U.S. Border Patrol recorded just 8,725 illegal crossings—down from a staggering 117,905 in May 2024. The Trump administration attributes the drop to aggressive enforcement measures, including expedited removals, renewed diplomatic pressure on Mexico, and the resumption of border wall construction.
But Senator Murphy had a different take.
“I don’t give them credit for that,” Murphy said. “Border crossings are low because they’re violating the law every day.”
Murphy accused the administration of suspending asylum rights for people fleeing persecution—an argument that quickly turned into a broader indictment of Trump’s leadership.
“They are not allowing anybody to come here to apply for asylum,” he said, adding that the U.S. is “on a road to see our democracy become unrecognizable.”
Murphy cited a bipartisan bill introduced in 2024 to reform asylum eligibility and speed up adjudications.
