A two-year-old boy has been killed and five other people left seriously injured following a devastating collision on a major A-road after a family car broke down and was struck by another vehicle.
The tragedy unfolded on the northbound carriageway of the A1 in Cambridgeshire on Saturday evening, shortly after 6.20pm, as traffic flowed through the busy stretch near Stibbington Junction.
The toddler, who was from London, was travelling in a Toyota Auris that had reportedly suffered a breakdown and come to a stop in a live lane of traffic. Moments later, the stationary vehicle was hit by a Volkswagen Touran, causing catastrophic damage.
Emergency services were scrambled to the scene, where they found the young child fatally injured. Despite efforts by paramedics, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Five other occupants of the Toyota, all believed to be from London, sustained serious injuries in the collision and were rushed to Peterborough City Hospital for urgent treatment. Their conditions have not been formally updated, but police confirmed their injuries were severe.
The driver of the Volkswagen Touran, a 64-year-old man from Peterborough, suffered only minor injuries. He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Police later confirmed the man has since been released on bail and is due to return on March 20 while investigations continue.
Major Emergency Response
The collision triggered a large-scale emergency response, with police, paramedics, and fire crews attending the scene. The A1 was closed for several hours as investigators carried out forensic examinations and recovery operations.
Motorists faced lengthy delays as traffic was diverted while officers worked into the night to piece together exactly how the collision occurred.
Photographs from the scene show emergency vehicles lining the carriageway near the junction, with debris scattered across the road following the impact.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
Cambridgeshire Police have launched a full investigation and are appealing to the public for help as they seek to establish the precise circumstances leading up to the crash.
In a statement, Sergeant David McIlwhan expressed condolences to the grieving family and urged anyone with information to come forward.
“Our thoughts are with the parents and family of this young child who has tragically lost his life in this collision,” he said.
“The family is being supported by specialist family liaison officers at this extremely difficult time.
“I would appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage but was unable to stop at the scene to get in touch.”
Officers are particularly keen to hear from drivers who were travelling on the A1 northbound around the time of the crash and may have captured footage of the moments leading up to the collision.
Anyone with information has been asked to contact police online, quoting incident number 401 of December 20.
Questions Over Road Safety
The fatal crash has once again raised concerns about the dangers faced by motorists when vehicles break down on high-speed roads.
Safety experts warn that stopping in an active lane on a major A-road or motorway can be extremely hazardous, especially during busy periods or low-light conditions.
Drivers are typically advised to pull onto a hard shoulder or exit the vehicle and move to a place of safety if possible. However, not all roads provide a hard shoulder, leaving stranded motorists dangerously exposed to oncoming traffic.
Local residents and road users described the stretch of the A1 near Stibbington Junction as particularly fast-moving, with vehicles often travelling at high speeds.
Investigation Ongoing
Police have confirmed that the investigation remains in its early stages and that multiple factors will be examined, including vehicle positions, visibility, traffic conditions, and driver actions.
Forensic collision investigators are expected to analyze skid marks, vehicle damage, and dashcam evidence to establish a timeline of events.
The death of the toddler has prompted an outpouring of sympathy online, with many expressing heartbreak at the loss of such a young life just days before Christmas.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on supporting the injured survivors and the family of the child whose life was tragically cut short.
