A young British man is stranded in Thailand with a medical bill exceeding £100,000 after suffering devastating injuries during a visit to a popular tourist spot discovered on TikTok.
On 12 April, 21-year-old soldier Liam Gibson suffered a life-altering accident at Na Muang Waterfall 2 on Koh Samui. While attempting to take a photo, he lost his footing and plunged onto the rocks below, sustaining catastrophic injuries.
According to his girlfriend Lucy Baldwin, Liam was left in a critical state, with multiple bones broken across his body. “He had bones sticking out of his legs. His face and skull were completely shattered,” she said.
The response time from emergency services was slow, taking two hours to arrive and another three to extract him from the dangerous terrain. Throughout that time, Liam was conscious and in agonizing pain.
Doctors later confirmed the extent of his injuries: a shattered femur broken in three places, fractures to his right arm, left hand, nose, cheekbone, eye socket, and skull, along with several lacerations. He has since undergone major surgeries and blood transfusions, but remains in a fragile state.
While Liam has survived the immediate threat to his life, his journey is far from over. He requires urgent transportation back to the UK for additional surgery and rehabilitation — but he cannot leave the Thai hospital until the outstanding medical bills are paid in full.
A GoFundMe campaign set up by Lucy is attempting to raise the necessary funds to cover both the hospital fees and a medical evacuation flight. “The bills are piling up, and every extra day he stays, the cost increases. He needs to come home to continue his recovery,” she said.
Lucy recalled the terrifying moments after the fall, finding Liam unconscious and badly injured: “He had disappeared for a bit too long. When I found him, he was passed out, bleeding heavily, and I had to hold onto him with my arms and legs to stop him from slipping further. It was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced.”
Na Muang Waterfall is a well-known destination among tourists in Thailand, but it’s also been the site of several past accidents — some fatal. Liam’s story serves as a harsh reminder of the risks that can come with seeking the perfect photo at Instagram-famous locations.
The family is urgently appealing to the public for support. Donations can be made via their GoFundMe page to help bring Liam home and give him a chance at recovery.
