Kamala Harris Faces Lukewarm Reception Among California Policy Insiders Ahead of 2026 Governor’s Race
As California gears up for its 2026 gubernatorial race, speculation is growing about whether former Vice President Kamala Harris will return to her home state to run. While Harris brings national recognition and a trailblazing resume, a recent Politico/UC Berkeley Citrin Center survey reveals that California’s policy insiders—legislators, staffers, and advocacy leaders—are largely unenthusiastic about her potential bid.
The survey found 36% of insiders were “indifferent,” 24% were negative, and only 40% expressed excitement. This tepid response contrasts with the stronger early support Gavin Newsom enjoyed ahead of his gubernatorial run.
Though Harris remains popular with Democratic voters—especially among women and communities of color—insiders cite her 2024 presidential loss, campaign fatigue, and doubts about her state-level focus as reasons for their hesitation. Harris’s post-election low profile and lack of a formal campaign launch have added to the uncertainty.
Still, many voters remain energized by her candidacy, suggesting grassroots potential if she fully commits. As the field takes shape, insiders’ early skepticism could either push Harris to prove herself—or open the door for new leadership in post-Newsom California.
